Investing in BC/Yukon Mining Projects – What is Hot?

, , , , , ,

We started this site because we are big supporters of mining and exploration and we wanted to promote that Canada is one of the few mining jurisdictions where environmental stewardship and political stability exist. While the sector itself is known for it’s volatility, Canada is one of the ‘safer’ mining destinations to invest in. Initially, we focused on Northern BC – a region that we know very well – before expanding to cover the rest of BC and the Yukon. We have no mining investments in the rest of Canada.

Where our investments are concerned. We’re not fair-weather investors. At the same time, we don’t have a lot of money in play. For context, most of our positions are less than $5,000 but, in handful of cases, we’ve taken positions of $ 10,000 or more. We look at a variety of factors before investing. Here’s what we look at:

Short vs Long Term

Short Term

Some stocks and projects are good summer money makers. Stock is low post-Christmas and we buy after considering the company’s commitments for the coming season. How aggressive is their drilling program? How much money do they have for drilling? Who is overseeing their drilling program? What is the reputation of the drilling company?

Most importantly, what is the company’s intention for the coming season? If the company can’t provide an straightforward answer to this question, walk away.

Long Term

The acquisitions market is very active and may require more of your attention than you’re prepared to give. However, if you do keep your ear to the ground, you’ll find out where the big players are looking. For instance, Barrick and Newmont are big explorers with the pockets and resources to acquire smaller companies who may not possess the means to fully realize a resource. BC and Yukon are home to some very large deposits of gold, copper, silver but moving any of these projects forward means overcoming a series of environmental and logistical challenges, not to mention the business acumen needed to work collaboratively with First Nations communities. Many of the smaller players are simply too small – they don’t have the man power or the expertise to tick all the boxes.

Some of our investments are short term and others are buy and hold. In short here are some of the stock that have caught our eye:

Troubadour Resources TR.V

Surge Copper SURG

Enduro ENDR

Orestone ORS

Pacific Empire PEMC

Imperial Metals III

Skeena Resources SKE

Barrick Gold ABX
